Android Forex Apps

Hello. As Android’s popularity grows, it’s nice to see that developers, brokers and vendors are releasing more FX apps. I am using some of them so I’d like to some impressions. If you use an Android phone and know/find any good FX apps, please reply.

Oanda FXTrade Android

Oanda FxTrade for Android

With over 100k downloads, Oanda FxTrade for Android is one of the best and most popular trading applications in the Android Market so far. I’ve been waiting for this application to become available last year, before I switched from iPhone to an Android phone. If you trade with Oanda and want to control your trades when you’re away from your PC, then this application is a must-have. The app can be used with a demo account too, in case you only want to check the quotes and charts to see how much money you’ve won or lost since leaving your comfortable PC chair.

In the latest version, Oanda also added the Activity tab, where you can check your last trades.

However, there are some things I don’t like about this application. I am not sure yet if they fixed the problems in the last update I just made, so I will check on Monday and edit this post if necessary:

It is quite slow. It takes too much time to login (between 5 and 20 seconds). It also takes a lot of time loading the rates and if you exit the app (switching tasks) or if the phone goes in stand-by while you’re looking at the quotes, they won’t refresh when you switch back and you have to exit to the app’s main screen and re-open the quotes panel.

Dukascopy AndroidDukascopy’s Swiss Forex for Android

This application was my favorite on iPhone. Luckily – Dukascopy launched an Android version in December, 2010. Unfortunately you can’t use it to trade but it is a very useful tool for real-time quotes, charting and news. It also has a Forex TV tab where you can watch some Forex News, Market Snapshots and other videos – to remind you that (Guess what?) a smartphone can be used to watch multimedia content. That’s right. Fancy videos never looked better, especially if you want to watch Monday’s economic calendar presented by a cute lady or the FX Cartoons when you’re at Starbucks, enjoying the free WiFi.

Overall it is a very good application and runs faster than Oanda’s FxTrade. The News (powered by Dow Jones Newswires) is also an advantage. Charting is also good for a mobile platform and you can add some basic technical studies such as MACD, RSI, Stochastic, Momentum, Moving Averages, CCI, ADX. It also allows you to use Point & Figure charts and that’s a great thing – making this little mobile app better than some “advanced” and expensive PC charting platforms I know.

Trade Interceptor

This application is a pleasant surprise.
It is available for all modern smart phones (iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile) but also on Desktops (Windows, Mac, Linux). It can be used to trade via multiple brokers: FXCM, Dukascopy, MB Trading, FX Solutions and GFT. The charts are very nice and you can zoom in/out, scroll a few years back and add technical indicators such as Bollinger Bands, ADX, ATR, CCI, MAs, Parabolic SAR, Williams %R and much more. Here is a demo video I found on youtube:

Forex News by templar

This app grabs the feeds from various FX News sites such as DailyFX, Action Forex, Bloomberg, Forex News Now, Dow Jones Newswires and groups them by currency in the top menu. You can find it on the Android Market if you search for “forex news”

Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters News Pro

These two are not dedicated to FX but both apps are useful for quotes and news, especially if you are monitoring other markets such as equities or commodities.
